I remember.... when I was five, our brother Dan contracted scarlet fever. This was very contagious in 1935. Dan was taken to an isolation hospital and the house was quarantined in order to be fumigated. Big red crosses were painted across the front door and front wall. Lanny put me on the cross bar of his push bike and my bag on the back. He cycled us up the main road in Ferndale from King Street to Church St to stay with our grandparents until it was safe to return home.
